Nvidia’s newest 3D gaming cards deliver more power, as promised

October 6th, 2006

The latest gaming cards from Nvidia don’t particularly shake up PC gaming. They are instead a collective incremental step, giving you faster performance for the same price as previous-generation cards. From the high-end GeForce (GF) 7900 GTX to the more populist GF 7600 GT, none of these cards adds new features, but that’s OK. As long as the new product is better than the old, we really can’t complain. Read the rest of this entry »

Symantec on the attack over Vista security features

September 21st, 2006

When Windows Vista ships next year, customers might have a tougher time getting their security software to work properly, according to executives from Symantec.
At issue are two new features being introduced with Vista: an enhanced Windows Security Center as well as a feature in the 64-bit version of Vista called PatchGuard. Microsoft says it is adding these features to lock down the operating system, but Symantec believes that they will be harmful to customers by making it harder for them to use third-party software.
“There’s no question that they’re leveraging a monopolistic position to limit customer choice,” said C. Paden a Symantec spokesman. Read the rest of this entry »

Microsoft’s new search engine exits beta

September 12th, 2006

Microsoft is removing the beta, or test, tag from Live Search, its next-generation search engine, and making it the underlying search tool at its MSN.com portal.

The move comes as Microsoft anxious attempts to gain traction in the search engine market, where it remains a distant third behind leader Google and Yahoo. Because search engine-based advertising is a fast-growing, multibillion-dollar business, Microsoft has invested heavily in improving its search tools and accompanying ad network. But it has failed to make a dent in Google’s dominance.

In June, Google nabbed 45 % of all search engine queries in the Union States, while Yahoo got 29 % and Microsoft 13 %, according to comScore Networks. This represents a market share reduction for Microsoft of almost 3 % points from June 2005. Read the rest of this entry »

Move Quickly Between Your Open Windows

September 4th, 2006

Manage the proliferation of open application windows on your desktop.

Chances are good that you have several application and folder windows open on your computer right now. You probably switch between them by pressing - if your hands are on the keyboard, or by clicking a taskbar button if you’re mousing around. That’s great for managing a few windows, but when you have several copies of a single application open (say, three pages in Internet Explorer, three instant messenger windows, and a couple of different folders), things get more complicated. Windows gloms their taskbar buttons together: You have to click, read a pop-up menu of options, and then click again in order to view the window that you want (click to preview). Or if you have multiple documents open in your application, you have to switch to the app first (via mouse or keyboard) and then use another mouse or keyboard method to switch to the right document within the program. If window management is slowing you down, try these tips for customizing taskbar behavior and window access to find a style that suits you. Read the rest of this entry »

Microsoft’s Live Services Come Together in New Toolbar

September 1st, 2006

Version 3 of Windows Live Toolbar integrates maps, desktop and Web search, and news-feed management.
By Computers Blogster

Every time you turn around, Microsoft seems to be releasing–or rechristening–a Web service with the Windows Live moniker. To date, seeing how all of these Live tools work together has been difficult, but in the new version 3 of the Windows Live Toolbar for IE 6, we finally get an inkling of that integration. The toolbar offers easy access to other Windows Live services, such as Live Search, Live Messenger, and Live Mail. Unfortunately, however, accessing non-Microsoft services is more difficult than it should be.

At 1.3MB, the free Windows Live Toolbar is quick to download. Setting it up is straightforward, though it doesn’t offer the easy drag-and-drop customization of Google Toolbar. At first glance the toolbar’s numerous options can be overwhelming, as it packs dozens of functions in a very compact space, and remembering which feature is located on which button’s submenu is a challenge. New Intel Core 2 Duo Systems Reach Top Ranks

August 30th, 2006

New Intel Core 2 Duo SystemsFour PC’s equipped with the powerful new dual-core processors make impressive debuts, capturing the top spot on the value side of the chart and the top three positions on the power side. Intel’s new Core 2 Duo processors are shaking things up on both sides of our Top 10 Desktop PCs chart this month.
Four of the five systems we tested that are powered by Core 2 Duo processors made the cut: two models from Dell; and our new Best Buys, CyberPower’s Gamer Infinity SLI Ultra in the power category and Velocity Micro’s Vector GX Campus Edition among value PCs. The fifth Core 2 Duo model, ABS’s Ultimate X9, logged the highest performance ever on our WorldBench 5 tests, with a score of 181, but it missed the chart due to design flaws.
Micro Express’s new Athlon 64\0×2013based MicroFlex 60B wins a spot on the power list, too, while the value category hosts new models from eMachines, CyberPower, and Shuttle.
